Our buddies over at SPOOK Mag have a Darwin Deez competition going on - find out how to win!

Darwin Deez is coming to Australia! That’s pretty cool. Not enough? You want more? You wanna hang out with him? You wanna interview him for SPOOK? You want to direct a shoot with him, with your concept to feature in the next issue of SPOOK? Well get your crayons and craft paper out and get to work! Don’t say we never give you anything…

NME called him “Totally fucking awesome” and the 10,792 people on his Facebook agree. Scrambled eggs only have 959, so basically 9,833 more people like Darwin Deez than scrambled eggs. After hearing his self titled debut album, we know why – Darwin Deez will probably be the soundtrack to your summer, scrambled eggs won’t.

The Deez hits our shores at the end of the month for Parklife, so SPOOK and Inertia want to give you the chance to not only hang out with Darwin, but also interview him and direct the photo shoot that will be featured in SPOOK 5.

Romy Grbic shows us how to get the perfect smokey-eyes look with help from Napolean Perdis.

Here we have a spin on the classic smokey eyes night-time look. Meet smokey-eyes-with-a-splash-of-sixties-hippy-and-just-a-touch-of-gothic-glam. I’m pretty much in love with it. The nude lips compliment the dark eyes perfectly, and how amazing does the scraped back hair look, offset by her beautiful voluminous waves? I am in love. And luckily for me, the creative team at Napoleon have let us in on all their magic tricks, and are showing us step by step how to achieve this fabulous look. (It’s a bit tricky, so give yourself a good amount of time to get this look perfect.)

Key products used:

•	Auto Pilot Napoleon Complex skin renewal serum

•	Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation

•	China Doll Gel Eyeliner in Equinox

•	China Doll Gel Eyeliner in Silver

•	Prismatic Eye Shadow Quad in Water

•	Prismatic Eye Shadow Quad #6

•	Mesmer-eyes Mascara

•	Natural Kohl Liner in White

•	NP Set Lipstick in San Francisco

•	Color Disc #8.Melon, White Wedding and Trench Coat

How to get the look:

Let’s start with the base:

•	Conceal dark circles and imperfections with concealer suited to your skin type and needs. Be sure to add a little highlight to the under eye area as the eye design is quite heavy. Take a little concealer over the lips to counteract pinkness.

•	Apply Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation all over the face.

•	Set (by applying a translucent powder) lightly in any areas that need to – do not powder the tops of the cheekbones.

•	Apply the first coat of Mesmer-eyes Mascara to the roots of the lashes.

Now for your eyes

•	Blend China Doll Gel Eyeliner in Equinox into the inner rim of the eye and blend into the lower lashes. Using a clean brush, begin to blend the liner along the lower lash line and thicken the line.

•	Continue to blend liner past the outer corner of the eye, elongating towards the brow. Sweep liner back along the top lash line, and blend with a clean brush to graduate colour up to the socket line.

•	Blend China Doll Gel Eyeliner in Silver along the outer edges of the shape you have created with the black liner to graduate colour from black to silver – ensure colour blends smoothly and does not step from one colour to another.

•	Using Prismatic Eye Shadow Quad in Water, sweep the silver lightly over the mobile lid and along the lower lash line.

•	Blend Natural Kohl Liner in White On through the inner bridge of the eye.

•	Sweep a touch of Prismatic Eye Shadow Quad #6 over the Natural Kohl Liner in White On at the very bottom of the brow. Blend colour out with Prismatic Eye Shadow Quad in Water (Lilac) and graduate colour into the silver shadow at the socket line.

•	Apply a good, second coat of Mesmer-eyes Mascara.

Lips

•	Apply NP Set Lipstick in San Francisco.

Cheeks

•	Contour the cheekbones with Color Disc Trench Coat, warm lightly with Color Disc Tawny Temptress (if needed, and whether the taupe is looking sallow).

•	Mix together Color Disc #8 Melon and Color Disc White Wedding, and sweep over the top over the cheek bone and along the lower part of the cheek under the shading to emphasise the contour.

Brows

•	Brush brow hairs upwards, and keep natural and raw.

And there we have it! It’s not easy (these guys are professionals for a reason), but if you followed these steps to the tee, you should be looking pretty H-O-T right about now.

This look was created by Napoleon Perdis, and executed by the Napoleon Perdis Creative Team.

It doesn’t get much more visually dramatic than the upwards view of Santorini’s Oia from Amoudi Bay, the picturesque enclave tucked into the bottom of the towering red mountain (upon which Oia is perched, somewhat precariously). A moon shape of seafood restaurants – in which one can enjoy their fish essentially in the water – if you follow the path around the cliff, you’ll come to a pile of rocks, a platform to jump off, and an assortment of holiday makers from around the world, trying to overcome their fear of heights and plunge feet first (head, if you’re daring) into the clearest water you might ever see.

Lin Tan interviews Artistic Director of Overload Poetry Festival, Luiz Gonzalez Serrano.

Born in El Salvador, Luiz Gonzalez Serrano first entered the Melbourne poetry scene in 2002. Since then, he has published a collection of poetry entitled, Cities With Movable Parts and is currently the Artistic Director of Melbourne’ Overload Poetry Festival.

Serrano’s introduction to poetry began at an early age when his family and him returned to El Salvador from Australia after the civil war. “When I went back, I discovered a lot about my family and a lot about the history of the country because my family had played a part in this war; they were kind of freedom fighters,” he recalls.

Roque Dalton

It was during this time that he discovered the political poetry of Roque Dalton in his grandmother’s attic. “For me, it was a personal discovery, a discovery of my family and my family’s roots, and what happened during that time, and that is sort of how I discovered poetry and how I grew to love it.”

Serrano ranks the poetry of Baudelaire as well as various different Latin American poets as some of his favourites. And when he again returned to Australia, he discovered the Beat Generation writers. “It is just amazing for me how sometimes within similar periods of time, how the writing of poetry of a certain period of time, changed so much between continents and between countries,” he explains. “It is a bit like having snapshots of what it was like in the 1960s America during the Beat period, or what it was like to be in the 1800s France to be reading Bauderlaire. It is a little bit like that and how some of that can be so relevant now still.”

Throughout the year, Melbourne is a hub for poetry readings, albeit they are rather underground activities scattered all over the city. The aim of this festival then, is to gather everyone involved in this literary artform under one event.

“Overload is really a grassroots collective,” explains Serrano. “There are so many readings in Melbourne that you could basically go to a poetry reading or some sort of spoken word night every night of the week.”

This year’s event will run for 10 days and will feature poets of all disciplines and from all over the country.

“We try and showcase things that have been on previously throughout the year; good shows that probably didn’t get a good enough exposure, or would deserve a better exposure or a second go. We also take submissions – we do call-outs for expressions of interests roughly around March, and then there is a curated part of the festival.”

The curated part of the festival is themed ‘Screening the Word’, which looks at the idea of suppressing and surveying freedom of speech. “We are going to be debating and discussing issues to do with freedom of expression around the world, especially to do with writing and poetry,” says Serrano. “So that’s why we have Judith Rodriguez from PEN International talking as a keynote speaker in our opening night. She’ll also be doing a panel discussion during the festival about issues to do with freedom of expression.”

Although freedom of speech isn’t much of an issue here in Australia, there are still countries in the world where people’s voices aren’t being heard. Poetry has long been communicative tool for non-literal political and social expression especially vibrant in the works of Ahmed Hashim, who will be part of the A Hundred Times Betrayed panel discussion.

Hashim was born in Iraq and moved to Australia during the war. With a desire to report what was going on in Iraq, Hashim wrote haikus, a 17-syllable poem originally from Japan. “The problem was, because it was such an insecure place and militarised zone, you can’t just grab a camera and take photos,” explains Serrano. “He [Hashim] has come up with a series of vignettes – little snapshots – of what Iraq is. They are little small nuggets of the situation in Iraq, and that is kind of an example of how he had to repress himself because he didn’t have the mediums to be able to research the subject properly.”

Aside from discussing issues of freedom of expression, the festival will showcase poetry in many different forms. Poetry Slam, for instance, will act as a literary form of American/Australian Idol where participants will deliver their poems in spoken word in front of three judges. The twist is that the judges will be selected at random from the audience on the night itself, and special efforts will be taken to ensure that the ‘chosen ones’ have nothing to do with poetry.

“The great majority [of Poetry Slam competitors] do try and perform in a much more outgoing way. It is really about the performance, how you deliver your poems, and it can be very energetic,” says Serrano. “Sometimes there are some people that use a lot of that similar rhyming style found in Hip Hop, but everyone sort of gets their turn on the stage so it is not like a rap battle.”

Though spoken word will be a primary focus this year, video-poems (voems), or ‘Poetronica’, as poet Gianni Totti first coined it, will add a unique aspect to the festival. Here, festival goers will be given the opportunity to experience this new wave, experimental, underground form of expression, which, over the recent years, has quickly grown in popularity. “A video-poem is a poem written in film. It can have someone speaking, it can have a certain narration, sometimes it doesn’t, and sometimes there’s no narration at all.”

And as if to pay homage to Melbourne, the festival will present Melbourne Poetry Map: Audio Graffiti, featuring poets Ezra Bix, Bella Li, Steve Smart and many more. Poems from this event are inspired by Melbourne, which you can download from the Melbourne Poetry Map website. You will also be provided with a map to enjoy a self-guided tour with spoken word in your ear, and even catch the poets reciting their work in the flesh. Lastly, in partnership with Federation Square, poetic digital texts will be scrolling across the west-facing wall located on the corner of Flinders and Swanston street throughout the 10-day festival.

Of course, there are many more events at this year’s Overload Poetry Festival, and luckily, you’ll be able to catch them all. “What we have done with this year’s programme is that I’ve tried to not make too many things clash. If you chose to, you could go to everything. I reckon the things that you should get into are the one-off performances.” One of which is a bilingual gig in both Spanish and English, which Serrano explains: “It is not just poetry; it will be a bit theatrical. It will have dance, it will have music, it’ll have multimedia projections.”

"this quirky, character-driven film is an excellent example of American independent cinema"

Looking at the lives of the middle class in NYC, this quirky, character-driven film is an excellent example of American independent cinema. Writer/director Nicole Holofcener (Lovely & Amazing, Friends with Money) gives us a story of dissatisfied New Yorkers, who while they don’t really have that much to complain about are oddly captivating with their neuroses and navel-gazing.

Please Give stars queen of the indie flick Catherine Keener (Synecdoche New York) as Kate, co-owner of a trendy second-hand furniture store with husband Alex (Oliver Platt, Frost/Nixon). The couple have an awkward teenage daughter Abby (Sarah Steele), who is going through some self-image issues. Together they live in an apartment next door to the elderly Andra (Ann Morgan Guilbert), a woman too old to care about manners and social graces. Andra’s granddaughters Rebecca (Rebecca Hall, Vicky Christina Barcelona) and Mary (Amanda Peet, 2012) are her only visitors, mainly Rebecca, a sweet-natured radiologist. Beautician Mary is pretty verbal about her dislike of her grandmother and doesn’t feel the same obligation that keeps her younger sister coming back.

These people’s lives interact and intersect because Kate and Alex have bought Andra’s apartment and are waiting for the old lady to die before they can knock through, a morbid connection that makes the couple feel obliged to be a part of Andra’s life. This odd atmosphere of selfishness and guilt permeates the film. Kate’s feelings of ambivalence about her store’s vulture-like profits from deceased estates, begins to weigh on her conscience. She increasingly overcompensates by trying to give generously to homeless people and by getting involved in community projects, which she is just not cut out for.

There is not a huge amount of plot to Please Give, with the film’s interest coming from the character’s relationships and their inner-sense of vulnerability. Keener is always intriguing to watch on screen and Platt is a good counterbalance to her emotionally torn character. Nearly all the characters walk the tightrope between likeable and unpleasant; especially good is Peet, whose Mary is happy to put her feelings before anyone else’s. Rebecca as the put upon self-sacrificing sister has a less meaty role, but the world of mammograms she inhabits is an unusual and interesting film landscape.

Holofcener looks at middle-class guilt through a female prism, giving us a rather satisfying character study. Please Give isn’t laugh-out-loud funny, it is witty and clever-a pleasing tale where not much happens, but spending time with the film’s characters is enough. The script is invested with a real sense of catharsis, making the film more upbeat than it first appears.

"Anything that promises me it will stop the effects of ageing...gets a massive thumbs up from me."

Now, this is the kind of thing I get excited about. A skincare range arriving on my doorstep, wrapped beautifully, and after opening reveals products with luscious sounding names like Tight Firm and Full Eye Serum, Bright and Beautiful Serum and Anti-Wrinkle Retinol Serum.

Anything that promises me it will stop the effects of ageing, or at least try and slow them, gets a massive thumbs up from me. After applying the Eye Serum, my eyes feel like any sign of tiredness or bags disappear – just by looking at the shimmery serum on my fingertips makes me imagine shiny, bright eyes. The Anti-Wrinkle Retinol Serum is a pottle (and you know how much I enjoy pottles) filled with magical looking capsules. Each capsule contains Retinol (a form of Vitamin A, the essential vitamin for skill cell renewal) and they feel oh-so-velvety smooth when applied to your face. Really quite heavenly.

This range would be a great kit for any girl to invest in, though my bathroom cupboards are so overflowing and exploding that I do find it tricky to fit new items into my routine. In saying that, though, I have managed to squeeze in the Anti-Wrinkle Retinol Serum (every second night, underneath my Rose Hip Oil, and making sure to be extremely vigilant with my sun protection during the day – Vitamin A makes your skin much more susceptible to sun damage), and the Tight, Firm and Full Eye Serum makes for a great pick-me-up on those tired mornings.

Jim Mitchell reviews this "impressive debut" from J. Blakeson, but warns: "be selective about what you read and hear" about this thriller.

Before you venture out to see this impressive debut from Brit filmmaker J. Blakeson be selective about what you read and hear. Too much information gleaned about this engaging thriller’s plot twists will considerably lessen the experience. We won’t be spilling the beans here.

As the film opens, two crims – the hardened, older Vic (Eddie Marsan, Sherlock Holmes) and the younger, less confident Danny (Martin Compston, The Damned United) – fresh from jail, deck out a vacant apartment as a hostage room with meticulous precision. They’ve left nothing to chance – except underestimating the steely determination of Alice Creed (Gemma Arterton, The Prince of Persia), daughter to a millionaire who’ve they’ve kidnapped as their insurance policy to ransom $2million to buy a better life.

Still, the men mean business restraining the terrified Alice to a bed, gagging and stripping her down, amongst other indignities. It’s here that a fear creeps in that this might be some seedy sex slave caper but as is often the case with ‘Alice Creed’, nothing is what it seems.

Thanks to Blakeson’s sharp screenplay and some terrific performances, neither are the film’s wily characters. Vic is the menacing mastermind of the plan yet is capable of tenderness, Danny seems to be the downtrodden sidekick yet has no scruples in his cunning (watch out for his nude kickboxing move), Alice seems like the helpless victim yet has the chameleon like ability to adapt in her struggle to survive. Here, Arterton with her mascara-laden doe eyes proves very adept in conveying this, manacled and gagged as she is for considerable periods. As each twist, cross and double cross emerges, the stakes are raised.

Blakeson, in his attempt to make a kidnap thriller with a point of difference has taken quite a gamble – we barely see the kidnapping itself nor do we see or hear any interaction with the law or Alice’s father. Instead, the drama is largely about the dynamics between captors and captured and the changing tides of power, restricted to an apartment with this bare bones cast. It’s a credit to them and their director that the strategy works – you soon forget how claustrophobic and limiting the situation could be, being so caught up in the taut, suspenseful drama.

For a first time filmmaker, Blakeson shows a formidable sense of control, restraint and stylish flare reminiscent of a more established helmer and despite the odd misstep, takes the time to ratchet up the tension and intrigue. Go in as blissfully ignorant as possible and you’ll be guessing to the very end.

Romy Grbic gives us some tips on how to prepare your face before putting on the make up.

So this month, I’ve decided to take everyone through a step-by-careful-step approach to getting the perfect face of makeup, anytime, anywhere. We’re going to start with the basics. Skincare, and how to get a flawless finish, a perfect base, a working canvas, so you can breeze through the rest of your look. Skincare is very, very important when it comes to glowing skin. Just layering on a ton of foundation isn’t cutting the mustard, ladies. We can actually see any flaking skin, bumps and imperfections hiding underneath. Now, I know this cannot be helped, sometimes (I was victim to a highly vicious allergic reaction to tea tree oil, across my entire face exactly a month ago. It was the worst experience of my life, and really made me appreciate how lucky I am to have a pretty easily maintained complexion.)

Anyway, here are a few things you can do, to put your best face forward; cleanse – every day, and every night. Never, ever go to sleep with your makeup on. Follow your cleanser with a toner. This rebalances the pH of your skin, and also removes any excess cleanser. Moisturise! If your skin is naturally oily, don’t be scared of moisturiser. By avoiding it, you’re only asking your skin to produce more oil to make up for what you’re not putting on. There are a few other treats you can add in for your skin, such as retinol (vitamin A), which I like to use every second night. Underneath my moisturiser, rosehip oil, which is magical as a night moisturiser, or any kind of serum tailored to suit your specific skin needs. Aside from this, you also need to exfoliate once every five days (no more, no less) and a mask designed for your skin type, after exfoliating, will make your skin cry little happy tears of joy. Now that you’ve got a great starting point, feel free to add foundation, concealer and primer, willy-nilly. I’ve even found a few gems for you to test out below…

“Every makeup artist has their own great way to perfectly apply a foundation but what if you have to head out after a long day in the office and your makeup base is looking tired from the day? What then? A quick and easy way to freshen up your foundation without it looking patching and uneven is to first, warm a little hydrating moisturiser in your hands and then press it into your foundation you already have on. This will burst life back into the skin and foundation and give it that freshly applied look and it will also breakdown any powder you may have applied during the day. Then, add a little extra foundation just where its needed. Best to do this with a foundation brush. The brush will make your life much easier, you’ll use less product and get more control.”

The final part of Marc Vincenz's Transcendental Iceland questions the idea of 'life is but a dream'.

Transcendental Iceland: Radio to the Other Side

In Search of the Real McCoy

‘People fail to notice what they do when awake, just as they forget what they do while asleep.’ Heraclitus, Greek Philosopher, 535 – 475 BCE

Part 8: Fallacies, Paradoxes and Butterfly Logic

It was probably somewhere around 500 BCE when the Greek philosopher Heraclitus coined the term Logos: a fundamental concept intimating that there is a source and order to the cosmos; which, in the turn of its own screw, was interpreted to mean that things are pretty much as they appear to be. A hundred years after Heraclitus, Aristotle’s analytical logic was born, leading the way for predicate or mathematical logic: the basis for most current scientific reasoning; or so the story goes. Here we are 2,509 years later and we’re still pretty much stabbing in the dark.

Scientific reason is, of course, fraught with dichotomies, contradictions and misinterpretations. Often, what we originally believe to be the lay of the land ends up manifesting itself as the most farcical of theories. Some not-so ancient civilisation suggested, using their early principles of logic, that the Earth was flat, and lay like a pounding heart beating at the centre of the universe. For many hundreds of years, this seemed an entirely plausible hypothesis. Today we see this as one of many fallacies of logical reasoning. But I ask you this: Who knows what other inconsistencies presently manifest themselves right under our very own noses? The Ice Age? Evolution? Relativity? The Big Bang? Skimmed Milk?

Are we all just perched insect-like on a gigantic paradox?

Guðrún Hjörleifsdóttir, visionary, Seer of all things past, present and future, maintains she can look straight through walls. She says, ‘Life is a dream we are dreaming right now,’ and, ‘all matter is just energy vibrating at different wavelengths.’ Ergo, if you can somehow perceive the wavelength, you can see straight through it. And we all know, you can do virtually anything in dreams; so essentially, no limits barred.

Guðrún says that most people can only see energy when it manifests itself; when it ‘materialises’. Doesn’t science maintain that matter is not form unless so perceived? Matter is just atoms vibrating anyway, right? Okay, then let’s stretch this thought even further, and imagine that that thing you perceive to be in front of you, is only matter because you accept that the thing is what it appears to be (as you would without question, within a dream): a butterfly, a door, a house, a mountain.

Is it a butterfly, then? Or is it millions of swirling atoms that look like a butterfly? Your own mind presents matter to you as form so that you can interact with it. A convenient illusion, a symbol of form; so that, as Guðrún says, ‘We can manage the puzzle called life.’

But then, remember—hold on to this thought: Life is but a dream.

According to Guðrún, everything consists of bundles of energy—molecules, atoms—organising, splitting apart, then reorganising into more and more complex patterns, which is the sublime nature of the mind of the Universe; which, in turn, is manifested inside your own consciousness.

Guðrún claims she can see through matter into its very primeval essence, and into the past, present and future. But of course, as she explains, ‘Time is also just a condition of the mind [a manner of organising things into neat digestible packets]. Break down the notion of ego, and you will soon see that time and matter only exist to give you a hold on your own perceived reality. Past, present and future are essentially one and the same thing.’

‘Understand that nothing is separate from your own thoughts. Free yourself from the shackles of convention—those self-imposed boundaries, become child-like, more free. Then, master the mind, and you essentially have the potential to control everything in your life.’

The concept is, of course, that everything exists only because you think it into existence. In the words of the French philosopher, René Descartes: ‘I think, therefore I am.’

‘A friend of mine, who has passed on,’ she says, ‘came to me in my dreams (dreams within dreams, I guess) to impart deeper insights, speed up my learning curve, so to speak. I came to understand the significance of my third eye—it’s located at the apex of a triangle centred above the other two ‘standard’ eyes. It connects me to the universal mind, helps me to perceive these things. He also enlightened me on how it is that some of us hear “voices”. You know, it’s just like tuning into the right frequency on the radio.’

I could have sworn she was going to say that—the pattern proliferates.

And then, she says, ‘You know it’s circles within circles: The cycles of life, of mind and dreams, always go back to where they begin. Just look at how things manifest themselves—the geometry of planets, galaxies, celestial motions.’ It’s all built up like a swirling elliptical fractal, whereby, no matter how deep you go into the structure of things, new similar patterns emerge: a fractal of a fractal of a fractal—and so on: mirrors within mirrors.

With no limits, what then of logic? The rational mind?

The philosopher Gottlob Frege, one of the founders of modern logical thought, called logic: ‘the science of the most general laws of truth’. The twelfth-century Muslim scholar Averroes, called it: ‘the tool for distinguishing between true and false.’ Only, just on what basis of truth have we been making our rational judgements? Truth, of course, relies on the premise that falsehood also exists; if everything then is a dream, how can there be either? Does this throw logic right out the other side?

Through all of this talk with Guðrún, I believe I may have made the most singular discovery. Among other things, Einstein’s great predicate logic proposed that there was nothing that existed that could be faster than the speed of light. Now I know he was wrong. There is something faster: the speed of mind.

And not to disappoint those who tuned in last time to Transcendental Part 7. You will recall that Gústi, the soul-cleanser was exorcising the spirit who possessed his own living son. Well, as a matter of course, Gústi called on the light-beings who come from the heart of God, and convinced the offending spirit to depart this Earth and take the heavenly light-elevator to the other side. It was a successful exorcism; and yes, a happy ending.

But then, as you know, in dreams anything can happen.

It was the ancient Chinese philosopher, Kung-Sun Lung, who lived three hundred years before the birth of Christ, who wrote: ‘One and one cannot become two, since neither becomes two.’ Keep that in mind when the going gets tough.

This documentary explores the life and comedy of the late comedian Bill Hicks, as told by the ten people who knew him best. Family and close friends of the iconic performer share their memories and recollections building up a picture of the man and his drive for honesty. More than 15 years after his death, Hicks’ comedy is more popular than ever. His observational style of comedy included discussions of the essence of religion, government power and modern society’s double standards, which still resonate today. Harlock and Thomas’ documentary combines live action with innovative new animation techniques to celebrate the comedian using interviews, performance footage (some rare and unseen) and photographs.

Set in Austin, Texas the lives of three young people; emotional scarred and sexually promiscious Erica (Amanda Fuller), wannabe rock star Franki (Marc Senter) and mysterious Iraq war vet Nate (Noah Taylor) interlock with violent and tragic consequences. Promising plenty of surprises in the plot, the less you know about this film before seeing it the better. Written and directed by British filmmaker, Simon Rumley (who scored a cult hit with The Living and The Dead, 2006) this film has been described as part revenge thriller, part horror slasher and according to SUFF is both ‘unforgettable and intense’. You’ve been warned!
