Contribute
We here at Trespass are a fun lot, but we also have our thinking caps securely fastened, and thus enjoy an intellectual read that’s also bursting with fruit flavour. In this case, you’re the fruit.
We are also always interested in hearing from new writers – after all, we’re in the business of sourcing and encouraging the brightest buttons Gen Y has to offer. If you want to contribute to Trespass Magazine, then here is what you need to do …
- Read the mag thoroughly. It’s important you know the tone, style and sections of our humble publication. We aren’t Cosmopolitan, Cleo, Glamour, Marie Claire or a newspaper. We want our articles to have both heart and a voice. Preferably your heart and your voice. Don’t replace personal anecdotes with quotes from an ‘industry professional’ or humour with statistics. Give us well-argued opinions with interesting, relevant support and showcase your personal style.
- Come up with some ideas and polished pitches. Until you’ve written for the mag a couple of times, you won’t be given specific assignments, so it’s better you approach with your own arsenal.
Pitches along with a couple of samples of your writing and, if you have one, a link to a blog/online portfolio should be sent to Editor, Lin Tan, at lintan@trespassmag.com
- Please make sure your copy is as clean as possible. Commas, apostrophes and semi colons must be seen in their natural habitat, not scattered through the articles with gay abandon. Spelling must be perfect and articles show evidence of polishing.
Style Guidelines
General guide:
- Single spacing; Times New Roman: 12pt.
- All reviews (film, art, and music) should be between 400-500 words.
- Feature articles up to 1,000 words.
- All titles (Film, Book, Song etc..) and foreign words in italics.
- For reviews: writing in first person should be the exception, not the rule (think magazine not blog).
- Reviews must include director’s name, billed cast and Australian release date at the bottom of the article.
- Try and include references to directors/actors previous work within review e.g. Brad Pitt (Fight Club, Burn After Reading).
- All reviews need to come with pictures – url of jpg is preferred. A good source for these is http://thecia.com.au/. Any other links and/or trailers you think might add to the content are also appreciated.
What are we looking for, you ask.
The best thing is to get to know each section of our mag, that way, you’ll know what we are looking for and can pitch ideas specifically for sub-sections.
Food Section. Good recipes, preferably accompanied with photos, we’d like. We also accept videos for our online ‘cooking show’, so long as they are between 5-7 minutes long, and are informative as well as entertaining. Oh, and it’d be great if you can actually cook good food. Plus, we love cocktails and have an, ‘In Search Of The Perfect…” section. So, if you’ve been hunting for the perfect French Fry, pie, or candy in your native homeland, we’d be interested to hear about it.
Travel Section: We are always happy to accept polished photographs for our Photo Album section, as well as articles on your travel tales.
Feature Pieces: Here, we are looking for well-formed arguments, an interesting angle, and a fresh perspective on all things political, cultural and social.
