Giveaway: Boy – CLOSED

After the success of his debut feature, Eagle vs Shark (2007), New Zealand writer/director/actor Taika Waititi is back with his second feature film, Boy. Set in Michael Jackson and Thriller obsessed 1984, Boy is a coming of age story filmed in New Zealand’s North Island, in a small Maori community in the Bay of Plenty area. The film explores the relationship between 11 yr old Boy (James Rolleston), his younger brother- Rocky (Te Aho Eketone-Whitu) and their father- Alamein (Taika Waititi), who has recently returned to his home town after a 7 year jail sentence. Boy has an active imagination and likes to fantasise that his father is a superstar or a war hero, but really Alamein is a petty criminal that has never grown up.

Mixing comedy and drama Waititi’s film has some fantastic 80s moments, but also a dark undercurrent. Boy has been a hit in its homeland- becoming the highest grossing New Zealand of all time. The film has also been wowing audiences internationally, picking up awards at film festivals including the Audience Prize at the recent Sydney Film Festival.

Boy is a story about family, imagination and dealing with the reality of situations. With excellent performances from many untrained, first time actors, Boy is a charming film that delights with its New Zealand humour and warms the cockles of your heart with its honest narrative about a family trying its best to reconnect.
