Introducing … The Little Stevies

The Little Stevies have strong roots in the music industry. Parents of founding members and sisters, Sibylla and Bethany Stephen and long time friend, Robin Geradts-Gill, played in a pop band in the 70′s and the trio grew up together, surrounded by music. Since 2008, their group has grown to include Josh Barber, the multi talented percussion and drums expert.

Hailing from Melbourne, The Little Stevies have built up an exceptional reputation as a must see live act, drawing strong, loyal, Little Stevie-loving fans wherever they go. Their charming songs, witty on stage banter, unique style and overall uplifting aura are winning hearts throughout our music scene. Personally, I think this helped by their honesty; it is clear their music comes straight from the heart sans pretension. You can feel this on their debut album, released in February, Love Your Band.

It has been a large year thus far for the band; their highly anticipated debut album has been widely praised. Their first single, Sunshower soared to the top of the iTunes ‘What’s Hot’ homepage and received some solid national airtime. The band took their time with releasing their album, despite their EP being released back in 2006, a move I’d imagine has paid off by allowing the band to mature and carve out their own unique sound and style. The result – an album brimming with quality tracks that capture the very essence of The Little Stevies  in a full length studio work.

Apart from their exquisite three part harmonies, myriad instruments in their repertoire, catchy hooks and irresistible pop melodies, The Little Stevies have a depth. Their lyrics are a mixture of the personal and the profound; their songs are akin to your favourite stories put to music. The Little Stevies embody happiness; the music is refreshing, sunny, endearing and possesses that rare quality that connects you to a certain song. I challenge all of you to not to be glowing after listening to Love Your Band.

Bethany Stephen was kind enough to sit down with a bunch of Trespass questions and let us into the mind of one Little Stevie.

We are…The Little Stevies

We’re all the way from … Melbourne, Australia.

We fill our days with … work, touring, rehearsing, dreaming and doing.

The album I could (and have) listen to one million times is … Gomez ‘How We Operate’ – song writing at its best!

The first CD I bought was… definitely a cheesy pop-band like FIVE, Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears … oh dear.

The book I could read one million times is … Dr. Seuss ‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go’.

The song I wish I’d written is … ‘Your Smiling Face’ – James Taylor.

Our story so far goes something like this … My sister and I started the band with long-time family friend Robin after years of creative collaboration at shared family dinners and holidays, in the form of dances, home movies, plays, etc.  Our parents were also band mates when they were young, then they had babies (us). Then Josh, our drummer, came along about a year ago and was a perfect fit.

We’d love to play a gig in … a hot air balloon, telecast live to an audience of other hot air balloons.

The soundtrack to my/our childhood was … Queen, Beach Boys, Peter Allan, Beatles, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor.

Our album is … ‘Love Your Band’ released 2009.

Our music sounds like … us!  Three-part harmony, guitars, ukuleles, bass, drums, rain stick, glockenspiel.

We’re artistically inspired by … anyone who writes great lyrics, great riffs and great songs.

I’d love to be on the cover of any magazine that would have me.

Generation Y is going to outrageously change the world

I take my coffee … down St. Kilda pier to the edge of the water.

And the best place to get it is … Seven Grams in Richmond.

Given the chance (and a big suitcase) I’d steal Kylie Minogue’s wardrobe

Can’t last the day without… speaking to my sister.

My passport is ready to go, please buy me a ticket to … Paris.

If you’re heading to the bar, I’ll get a … Frangelico and lime.

If I was a super hero my power would be … to fly.

My favourite item of clothing is my… cloud pattern, sky blue dressing gown.

My worst fashion faux pas… was purple snake skin beaded top that was made from a sort of plastic feeling material.  It was dreadful, but at the time I just had to have it.

My favourite on road snack… is anything half healthy you can get from a servo…unlikely.

If I had twenty dollars left in my wallet, I’d buy… a ticket on a magical mystery tour.

The perfect Sunday… would be a day down the coast.  A swim, a snooze, some food, a surf, a sleep, a shop, some food.

The best thing about my job is … being in a band with my best mates.

My parents always told me … ‘being good is not good enough’ – it makes us not get lazy, strive to be better, work harder.

My motto for 2009 is … laugh long, live long.
