Great piece, Sam! I no longer have a clackety-clack typewriter, but you've convinced me to start hand-writing again, woo-hoo!

Every Sunday afternoon of my childhood, my mother sat and wrote a letter to my grandparents in England. Every week a blue aerogram with lovely curly handwriting arrived from my grandmother in return. The letters were left on the kitchen table for all of the family to read. Although they were weekly they were never banal. They included the musings and emotions of my grandmother as well as the activities of her week. Without those letters I would have had no contact with my only grandparents as a child. Through them I felt a connection to my family heritage. Long live the letter!

This was so nice to read. Felt old and dusty in the way yellowed old paper from a treasure box should feel. Writing is such an expression and an art - you captured that most beautifully. I can't wait to recieve my letter :)

Sam, you have such a lovely way with words.

In Officeworks today on a whim I bought a discounted pack of lovely coloured paper.... I'd better start collecting addresses for a big mailout :) (maybe mailout's not quite the right term - reminds me of mailmerging margeting letters at work)

Anyway, good stuff!

What a wonderful idea. I love letter writing, and I still, though not often enough, write a letter to a friend just for the hell of it. I have, from over the years, boxes and boxes of letters from friends. Sometimes, I sit back and immerse myself in them. There is nothing more sincere, more honest or more touching than a letter.

I love that you wrote them all from different places. Wonderful piece Sam, gave me goosebumps.

Tara - get on the bandwagon, you can start by sending me one, I promise to reply.

K - i'm glad you liked it, have you replied to your 10 year old cousin? He might be yearning for some contact!
