Letter from the Editors: Green Week

Green has never been so cool. In decades to come, of the movements that will define our generation, the green one is at the forefront. Going Green is an action, a statement, a trend and a necessity – and what we do with it will be our legacy, whether we like it or not.

More than ever, the need to ‘go green’ has been infiltrating our everyday life. There have been global debates over the harm we are doing to our planet and endless solutions have arisen as to how we can help our Earth cope. On the pessimistic side of things, there are those who deny global warming, arguing it is merely a myth, a theory that has yet to be proven and a folly green activists have created to explain the increasing rates of natural disasters. The cynics amongst us have suggested, perhaps with some merit, going green is simply a trendy lifestyle choice, it’s in vogue, enjoyed only by those who can afford it.

But the truth of it all is, whether you’re a cynic, a pessimist, a realist or somewhere in between, going green is a change we should all aspire to embrace. Although as individuals, we may only occupy but a minimal fraction of this world, we sometimes forget that this little planet of ours gave us life, and it deserves the reciprocal measure of caring for it as much as we can. And that’s all the preaching you’ll get from the crew at Trespass.

Like all Theme Weeks we’ll have here at Trespass, we aim to give you a little something different from rather broad subject matters. And we are only able to do this because of our wonderful contributors who have come up with their very own interpretation of Green Week.

From our Beauty Editor, Romy Grbic, we have a snapshot of fashion and beauty brands which are all either organic or environmentally friendly, including Trilogy, Antipodes and Eco Fashionista. Look out for her interviews with owners and managers of these brands.

In film, Beth Wilson has gathered a ‘Man vs. Nature’ list; her subtle humour had us in hysterics as she recalled movies in which the main protagonist, Nature, fights back against man. Sean Rom will also contribute with a review of the film, Green Zone by Paul Greengrass, and despite an overwhelming number of references to the colour green, has actually no environmental link at all. We, at Trespass, like to keep you on your toes.

You’ll also see some mother and daughter bonding this week in the form of our Editor in Chief, Liv Hambrett, and her mum, Jo Hambrett. Jo – gardener extraordinaire – will be teaching us how to make our own homemade vegetables in her article, ‘How To: Grow Your Own Vegetable Patch’. And in turn, Liv will be writing affectionately about her mother’s inner environmental warrior.

Antonia Hayes, writer of the ever-popular ‘What You Didn’t Expect‘ from Love Week, returns with ‘The Dilemma of Eating Animals’ – an in depth look into factory farming that provides helpful suggestions on how aid the fight against animal cruelty. In a tongue and cheek piece, Grace Edwards writes an open letter to everyone’s favourite environmental superhero, Captain Planet. Finally, Lin Tan skips down memory lane to recall her days growing up in the lush, rainforest surroundings of Malaysia, before her dreams are swiftly crushed in the careless hands of property developers.

There are also a few events happening in Australia and around the world of the environmental kind. A few days ago (7th of March) it was Clean Up Australia Day’s 20th anniversary, a communal event that encourages Australians to pick up the rubbish in their local areas, and dispose of them correctly. Next month on the 22nd of April, over one billion people will celebrate Earth Day, which seeks to promote the importance of sustaining our environment. World Environment Day and World Oceans Day will follow in June.

And finally, remember one thing; green is the colour of growth. If you walk away with anything from this week, let it be with an enriched education in what it can mean to Go Green and why it is so undeniably important we grab this trend/movement/necessity and give it a big old hug.

Love Lin and Liv xxx
