Postcard from: Paradise (okay, Fiji)
This week’s postcard comes from the delightful Victoria Haschka, sunning herself in Fiji.
Dear Trespass,
There’s an espresso machine in my hotel room.
There are two plasmas and outside the sliding doors there’s a hammock, a barbecue and a beach.
Bula you might say- oh- but I’m serious. Here at the ‘Fiji Beach Resort and Spa, managed by Hilton’, Hilton may seem like an afterthought in the branding, but someone has put their classy little mitts all over this place.
Flanking the beach there’s a pride of padded sun lounges under canvas umbrellas The white villas all face the dark sand beach of Denaru Island or one of the resort’s four pools.
There’s a patisserie that delivers pizza to your room, and stocks curry puffs, cakes, and New Zealand natural ice cream.
Between 4.45pm and 5.15pm there’s a sunset which swirls pink, orange and purple better than a nine year old who’s just got her first set of Derwent water colour pencils.
There are no bindies in the grass next to the beach. In the air conditioned gym, the televisions have the E channel. A one hour deep tissue massage at the day spa is more than enough to make you forget the initial trauma of having to put on disposable pants.
We’ve missed school holidays, so the only squealing comes from honeymooners. They tend to spend most of their time behind closed doors, probably making use of the bath built for two and the champagne glasses which are suggestively huddled next to it each day.
The food and drinks are a little exxie, but our fridge, microwave and espresso machine bring out our inner flashpacker. We wished we’d smuggled in some more snacks from home. But the two tins of lychees we chucked in the suitcase and the a bottle of duty free vodka in the freezer mean cocktail hour in the hammock comes pretty much for free. Lychee or coffee martini anyone?

Ed’s note: Thanks to a little financial tantrum, the cost of travel has plummeted, particularly around the Asia Pacific. Fiji is but a cheap flight away. Click here for starters, and start shopping for some travel bargains (the best kind).

Hi Tori,
Would you like an intro to ‘Qualia’ the new 5+ star resort on Hamilton Island?
If so drop me a line.
Cheers
Keith
I remember my first set of Derwent pencils…
Now it seems I need to get me to Fiji!
Nice work, Tori!
