Spotlight on: Nylon Pink

When it comes to being a Harajuku girl, Gwen Stefani has nothing on Kaila Yu and Kitt E. Kat from LA based band, Nylon Pink. Nothing. Oh she may have Love, Angel, Music and Baby following her around, but Kaila and Kat could take those girls on and win, any day. In fact, it should probably be a theme for the next saucy photo shoot these two do, which may propel Kaila to even greater Hot List heights. (Rolling Stone put her on their hot list in 2007, it might have had something to do with her 450, 000 Myspace friends and 9 million hits).

These girls are the fluorescent product of cultural fusion, a mutual love of performing and an unapologetic penchant for high drama. It’s a heady mix that has launched the band, spawned a live-streamed, self titled show and a jewellery line, Hello Drama, that is selling like hotcakes in Australia, and counts The Donnas as fans in the USA.

According to their Myspace which may induce an epileptic fit, it is that wonderfully over-stimulating,

“Nylon Pink is a multimedia sensation, they currently host their own self-titled show (the first and fastest growing live streaming network) where they interact with their fans and turn the spotlight on like-minded artists. Their newly launched jewelry line “Hello Drama Jewelry” is already garnering buzz and counts the rock band The Donnas as fans.”

And because you’re not an up and coming pop-star in LA until your music is on The Hills, the Nylon Pink girls can breathe a sigh of relief - their first single, Hello Drama was featured on the season premiere of the so-real-it-can’t-be-scripted show, this year. With Kaila on lead vocals and Kat on bass guitar, Hello Drama is shamelessly addictive, and should be belted out whilst prancing down Harajuku Street in Tokyo, wearing something short and pink, offset by a loud wig and knee high socks. Alternatively, keep the short skirt and wig, and drive down Sunset Boulevard in a pink jeep, stopping in at In ‘n’ Out Burger for a paparazzi moment. Either way, it works. Really well.

These girls are Hollywood meets Harajuku in the most outrageous way and a testament to just how effective online networking can be, when you’re a rising star in the making.

About the Author

Liv Hambrett is the Editor in Chief of Trespass. She has a weakness for the Scandinavian pop scene, doughnuts, and escapism (among many other things). She routinely pours cups of tea and forgets about them, buys international glossy magazines even though they highlight her fashion, fiscal and physical shortcomings and has lost count of how many perfumes she owns. This doesn't stop her from buying more. One day, she will write a bestselling book, turn it into an award winning screenplay, and retire to a villa (or yacht, she's not fussy) in the Mediterranean, to live out the rest of her days in sundrenched peace. If you lose her, look under a pile of books, scrap paper and empty tea cups, or check her bank statements for any recent, rash plane-ticket purchases. Don't try and call her, she's probably lost her phone.
