Lin Tan and her lovely friend march into Melbourne’s CBD and ask Melburnians what they think of Valentine’s Day.
What are you doing for Valentine’s Day? Going for a bike ride. I have no special someone to be going on a Valentine’s Day date with.
So if you did have a special someone, would you be going on a date? Yeah, probably, just to make her happy.
What would you do? We would go to dinner at a very, very expensive restaurant.
Have you celebrated Valentine’s Day before? Yeah, of course – at a very, very expensive restaurant. And there might have been flowers too.
Valentine’s Day – Hallmark holiday or most romantic day ever? Definitely a Hallmark holiday. Look, this is an old cliché but you should be able to show your affection to someone everyday of the year – you shouldn’t have to wait for that one day of the year [to do so].
What are you doing for Valentine’s Day? I’m going into work for Valentine’s Day.
What does Valentine’s Day mean to you? To me, it’s just another day.
Do you secretly wish to celebrate it? I think if you’re with someone, you celebrate everyday.
What’s a great Valentine’s day idea? Probably dinner at a nice restaurant.
Cupid’s arrow – weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love? Instrument of love.
Best Valentine’s Day ever? I’ve only had one. I just got chocolates at work.
What’s your ideal Valentine’s Day date? I don’t really like Valentine’s Day like I don’t like Christmas. I don’t like any of these big holidays in general (laughs).
Roses – cheesy or sweet? Maybe if they are not red, then they [roses] are quite nice.
Finish this sentence: I just asked someone to be my Valentine’s date but they said no: I’m going to call Harriet and cry.
Are you doing anything for Valentine’s? No.
Valentine’s Day – Hallmark holiday or most romantic day ever? Hallmark holiday.
Have you done anything romantic before? I’ve done something romantic before. You know, the cliché things – restaurants, flowers, chocolates – that sort of thing.
Do you think a guy should always ask a girl out? Yeah, most of the time a guy should ask. It’s a man’s job to ask a girl out.
Ideal Valentine’s Day? Go all out – restaurants, hotels, that sort of thing.
Cupid’s arrow – weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love? Definitely an instrument of love.
Are you doing anything for Valentine’s Day? No, why would I? I’ve got 6 girlfriends and I can’t take any one of them out because they all know each other and it’ll look bad if I only took one of them out.
If you had just chosen the one, what would you have done? If I was going to take a woman out for Valentine’s Day, she’ll be the hottest one I could find.
And what would you do with said woman? Anything it takes to get to the end of the road [insert cheeky face] – my house or maybe her house. I don’t want to explain anymore than that.
Valentine’s – Hallmark holiday or most romantic day ever? Not a romantic day. I’ve had better romantic days not on Valentine’s. It’s all just to make money.
Cupid’s arrow – weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love? Definitely instrument of love.
So you are romantic? At the moment, I’m not in a romantic state of mind. I would say yes, but in a lustful way. And how I would like to stimulate the fire, with whoever it is, it’d be a one-night stand or a week-stand.
Most romantic thing you can think of to do? Truck fuck! Look, to whoever is listening – right next to me is a truck for our job. But on the off-time, it’s called the truck-fuck. So what happens there, I’ll leave up to your imagination.
Well, I see that there’s no verifiable evidence that anyone has had any fun in the truck-fuck.
Any plans for Valentine’s? Probably getting together with a group of friends and having a nice night.
Have you celebrated Valentine’s before? If yes, what did you do? Yes, when I was in a relationship. We had a romantic dinner and a quiet night in.
Valentine’s – Hallmark holiday or most romantic day ever? I think it is a romantic-kind of day.
Doing anything for Valentine’s? Probably not.
Have you ever done anything for Valentine’s? Yeah, the same thing – a romantic dinner.
Was it a good Valentine’s? Yeah, because you’re with someone you love.
How would you describe your ideal, most romantic date? Just for that person to stay with me. As long as we are together.
Cupid’s arrow – weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love? Instrument of love.
Are you sad that you’re not celebrating Valentine’s? Yeah (laughs).
Are you doing anything for Valentine’s Day? No, just travelling. And I’m going to my friend’s graduation.
What’s a really romantic Valentine’s Day? Go to a restaurant and have a nice dinner.
Most romantic Valentine’s Day? We went to a restaurant, and had a table booked for us. There were candles on the table and we had dinner – some steak – and my boyfriend gave me a present.
Roses or chocolates? Both.
What are you doing for Valentine’s? I have to study because I’m doing a course now. No date.
What was your last Valentine’s celebration like? A very long time ago. We went out and it was romantic. If you like that person then it is romantic when you go out together.
Most ideal Valentine’s Day present? Some surprise gift, or whatever he can give me – something from the heart.
Are you doing anything for Valentine’s? I’m going to the Sheridan in Geelong for a buffet breakfast with my boyfriend.
What’s the most romantic Valentine’s date you’ve ever been on? That’s probably it [buffet breakfast] actually. I’ve never really done much on Valentine’s. My boyfriend just got back from six weeks in South America, and I usually don’t really care much for Valentine’s. But I just want to spend time with him and use it as an excuse for him to stay with me (laughs).
Valentine’ Day – Hallmark holiday or most romantic day ever? Yeah, a Hallmark holiday. I think it’s wanky. I’m doing something special but I feel kind of dumb doing it.
Cupid’s arrow – weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love? I suppose weapon of mass destruction (laughs).
Describe your most ideal romantic date. That’s a big question…I don’t know. Dinner on top of the Eiffel Tower.
Trespass Magazine thanks everyone for participating in this interview. To all Trespass readers, feel free to answer some of the questions yourself.

Haha. this is amazing. Valentine’s day is probably the most unromantic day ever. Because it’s so unoriginal and cliche. everyone has an excuse to get a present and give a present. there is no element of surprise. I HATE it. Not just dislike it – but HATE it! (ok that’s maybe because i’ve spent the last 20 V-days).
But seriously, that girl hates Christmas??????? :O That is tragic now!
Oh my word, truck-fuck guy…
Hmmm, we’ll leave it up to our imagination. Thanks. Bleurk.
The most romantic gift is always flowers pinched from someone’s front garden on the way to the date.
It’s lovely though to see so many people saying that love is a daily celebration. I will take that from this article and ignore the sentiments of Mr Truck-fuck.
Nice work, Lin!
