Trailer Teaser: Rudo y Cursi

Are you tough or are you corny?

The crème-de-la-crème of the Mexican film industry has tackled this curious question in the bittersweet comedy Rudo y Cursi. The film reunites Y tu mamá también stars (and all around dreamboats) Gael García Berna and Diego Luna, this time playing bickering brothers, catapulted from their banana ranch and pitted against each other on rival football teams, only to be spoiled by their success.

Already the highest grossing film in Mexican history, Rudo y Cursi has become a film festival darling, delighting audiences at this year’s Sundance and again this week at Tribeca. Now it’s set to continue the trend in Australia, with the film screening as part of the 12th Spanish Film Festival.

Rudo y Cursi is also, “a story about brotherhood made by brothers.” Carlos Cuarón, the co-writer of Y tu mamá también has taken the helm from his brother Alfonso, to write and direct Rudo y Cursi. Instead, Alfonso has co-produced the film, joined by fellow cinematic giants, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu.

In fact, Rudo y Cursi is the first production from these renowned directors (think Children of Men, Pan’s Labyrinth and Babel, respectively) to be released from their new company Cha Cha Cha Films. This impressive collaboration also boasts a $100 million, five-feature deal with Universal Pictures and its boutique branch, Focus Features International.

With a successful comedy already under their belts and four more features to go, it appears the Three Amigos – as Hollywood has christened them – might just get the last laugh.

Rudo y Cursi will be screening in May as part of the 12th Spanish Film Festival. Australian Release Date: TBC
