Chiwawa is a band that has endured and survived through more drama than most (at least when you compare Wikipedia pages). A Canada-raised daughter of Hungarian immigrants marries a Bulgarian band member to ‘save’ their project from being destroyed by the Atlantic Ocean, they settle in Montreal and embark upon various musical ventures before Laurie’s band, Chiwawa, eventually became what it is today: a rock/pop electronic duo.
Through all of this, they have recorded five full-length albums and collaborated with a variety of producers and musicians, and are currently working on the scores of several films due for release in 2011 and 2012.
1. Describe your sound and how it came about.
Pop, as in “popular music”. The sound – just trying things that appeal/satisfy our tastes and sensibilities.
2. What inspires you?
Everything. Life, people, nature, space, science, politics, relationships…I’d like to think that we always have something new to bring to the table. Even if it’s just a small side dish.
3. Who were your early influences? What was the first record you bought?
Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Roxy Music, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin… I could not buy records back then in communist Bulgaria. But the first album (bootlegged cassette) I listened to 5 or 6 times in a row was, And The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis.
4. Who would you most like to collaborate and/or tour with?
Damon Albarn.
5. Who do you most admire?
Peter Gabriel.
6. What would you be doing if you weren’t playing music?
I’d rather not think about it.
7. I couldn’t live without…
Love.
8. The best advice I ever received was…
Give, so you can receive.
9. When I was little I wanted to…
Grow up (fast). I wish I knew better.
10. What’s your guilty pleasure?
What’s it to you?
11. What have you always wanted to be asked?
Something I know the answer to.
