Trespassing With … Ranger Spacey

Ranger Spacey are a Sydney-based trio whose music style has been dubbed “Indie-Alt.Country Rock ‘n’ Roll for the Soul”. Forming in 2007, Vocalist, Songwriter and Guitarist Jimi Linton teamed up with Bass Player and High School friend Karl Napper, as well as freakishly talented drummer Bev, who was introduced to Jimi through Karl in a moonlit jacuzzi. They sought to make music that would combine Rock, Folk, Punk (the genres that Spacey had loved as youngsters), and Country (the music Jimi’s grandfather Smillin’ Billy Blinkhorn made a living and gained fame for), which Jimi grew up listening to. Now, Ranger Spacey are known for their live shows, delivering their Indie-Country Rock sound with a passion, enthusiasm and severity that can silence or incite an audience with just a well timed hook or a sharp turn of phrase. It is precisely in this fashion that Ranger Spacey Launched ‘World O’ Wire’ on the 26th March 2009 to a full house at the Annandale Hotel. And in honour of their second gig at the Annandale, we decided to trespass with Jimi Linton to see just how much rocking and rolling goes on in that musical head of his. And if you like it, be sure to catch them this Thursday 11 June, Annandale Hotel from 8pm. Tickets are $13 of which $1 goes to fBi Radio as they are struggling in these tumultuous economic times.

My name is … James ‘Jimi’ William Linton

I secretly wish my parents had called me … Townes Van Linton

I hail from … South East Sydney

By trade I am … Singer, Songwriter and guitarist for rock band Ranger Spacey

But in my spare time I …Well I graduated from University with a Psychology major but now I fix broken things at a high school for work, romance my girlfriend, read classic literature, drink cheap whiskey, rummage through thrift stores, take photographs, rock, roll… etc

If the Oracle of Delphi was still in existence, and I had one question I could ask her, it would be …How long must I wait till I can answer ‘Rock Legend’ when asked for my occupation when filling out forms?

My pride and joy is … My guitar collection and/or my 1988 Tarago

I take my coffee … With my left hand

I wish I wrote/sang/directed… Steppenwolf/Any early Neil Young song /Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

When I grow up I want to be … Successful by my own high standards and not ever boring

The perfect Sunday …  A sleep in, hearty meals and no tasks that are too taxing please

The last thing I bought was … Pistachio flavored gelato

Can’t live without … Love

I wish I never … I regret nothing

My ideal invention … A time machine that also cooks burritos

The first thing I do in the morning is … Remember where I am then find socks to wear … and the last thing I do at night is … “If I die before I wake, I pray…”

If I had a magic travel wand, my next holiday destination would be … The mind of Albert Einstein. I’d probably need goggles

I am terrified of … Being mediocre

One reason you should love me … Because I write great songs that you will hopefully still listen to in 10 years and I’m not a jerk mostly

If I could tell you all to check out one song I have recorded, it would be … Any of the tracks off Ranger Spacey’s debut E.P. ‘World O’ Wire’ but I suggest “Don’t Be Cold”.

About Sarah Ayoub

Sarah Ayoub is organised chaos in the flesh. Nerdy, culture-savvy and a tad over-excited, she flits between university study (where she’s preparing for a doctorate), shopping centres (where she impulse-buys things like designer handbags and chocolate coins) and her bedroom, (where she writes at a computer surrounded by writer’s mess). Shy but flamboyant, a brain but a bimbo, conservative but open-minded, Sarah decided to pursue a career as a journalist because she wanted to be Lois Lane and Clark Kent’s love child (inheritor of enviable journalistic skills and the ability to fly) and because her plan to be a psychiatrist was shelved after a viewing of The Sixth Sense. Desperately in need of a time machine, Sarah Ayoub is an iron fist in a velvet glove - and a walking contradiction that makes perfect sense.
